There is only way to shift reality. That is by intentionally giving more energy and attention to the reality you want to create and less attention to the one you currently live and breathe.
In this article I’ll share some hidden nuggets of goodness that will ultimately help you shift your reality.
Now some people will tell you that you need to “tough” it out. If you want to see real changes in your life, then you’ve got to ‘Get Out’ of your comfort zone and get to work.
Oh geesh… that WORKING-thing again.
These people don’t know what the hell they are talking about.
Discipline is an important part of reality shifting, for sure. You must take action and be disciplined with your habits. Good habits make great results.
But if it seems like work AND you’re pushing yourself to make it happen… then you’re doing it WRONG!!
It shouldn’t feel like work. IT should FEEL like play!
Yes – PLAY!
Shifting Your Attention
The reason it can feel like work sometimes (or more often than you like) is because your thoughts are projecting in ONE DIRECTION… while your body and the actions you’re taking are projecting in quite another.
Do you know how painful that can be?
It creates resistance, makes you angry, puts you in a crumby mood and pisses you off…
If you want to take inspired action that is fun and gets you into a vortex of creativity that is filled with goodies beyond your wildest imagination then you must be in harmony with your actions. You must focus your attention on what is downstream for you.
If more people did that, they would enjoy a labour of love of their choosing, stop trying so hard to be successful (like I desperately used to) and be more at peace with themselves and others.
Is it really that simple?
Yes! Absolutely!!
This very idea of shifting your attention and aligning it with your actions – is what turns normal people like you and I into rockstars, puts millions of dollars in our pockets and makes us super-successful.
Pretty cuel, right?
I think so.
All you need to do is make one simple – yet profound – shift. You must pivot your attention from where you are to where you want it to be. You must shift your focus to what you want … as opposed to what you don’t want.
That little hamster upstairs is moving, isn’t it?
The Role of Beliefs
Then what’s the problem? What’s the big deal here? Why do so many people struggle with this?
Here’s the thing. There are two major problems…
- Most people are generally clumsy (with their attention)
- We have these funny beliefs
Let’s start with the second one first. We have these funny beliefs. I don’t know who made them up or where they came from… but in a word they are very limiting ideas and thoughts… buzzing around in our heads.
And it’s not just those ideas buzzing around. It’s that we believe those ideas as if they are true.
Yes – true!
We don’t question them at all!
We don’t even think we have any limiting beliefs! It’s always the other person…. the employee at work, the client who tried to screw me, the government, the rude person at the grocery store and my mother who is to blame. It’s not me, it’s them!
And that’s a huge problem because… Beliefs = Reality
Really?
Yes, really. Whatever you believe is true in your experience. If you believe that everyone else (but you) is to blame for your health, your money situation, your romance (or lack of), then that shows up in your experience – in your reality.
These beliefs are the most powerful thoughts and forces we have…. because it is a thought you have had over and over again.
That’s all a belief really is… it’s a thought that you gave so much attention and energy to that over time you eventually began to believe it was true.
Some of these beliefs are helpful and others are not.
Limiting Beliefs at Work
How do they work?
Here’s a simple example.
Just the other day I was speaking with a woman about her business (I won’t mention her name for privacy reasons).
Let’s call this woman Janet.
Janet tells me she’s run into a few stumbling blocks. And these blocks are preventing her business from taking off and becoming super-successful.
Janet is in the coaching and consulting business.
So I said to her, “Tell me more. What are these stumbling blocks you’re speaking about?”
Janet says, “Well, I need money to grow the business.”
So I say, “What do you need the money for?”
Janet says, “To market the business and get new leads. The only way for me to make money in the business is if I spend money,” …and I immediately reply with,
“Sort of like the belief that, You need money to make money” …and the line goes quiet…
How many of you believe that you need money to make money?
What a limting way to live!
And guess what else is crazy?
People who believe they need money to make money… only attract, perceive and receive business opportunities that require what exactly?
MONEY!! You got it.
If you believe you need money to make money, then that is what you experience. That is your reality.
Beliefs = Your Reality
But that is only one idea!!
We have 1,000’s of these little mind-limiting beliefs buzzing around in our heads.
Have you ever thought of that?
Maybe you should. You have a glass ceiling to what is possible in your income and your outcome… ALL because of these limiting beliefs… yes!
So what should you do?

Now what?
More About Attention
Then you have your attention. Yes. You must also manage your attention if you want to see a shift in your reality – because your attention is what ultimately creates your reality.
So, how do you manage your attention?
If you got this far, then you want to notice specifically what kept you engaged and reading this far.
That is the secret to shifting your attention.
Was it the cool fonts on this blog?
Was it a feeling?
Was it your curiosity?
DO you know what it is?
Copywriters do it all the time. Good writers too.
Any guesses?
It’s asking good questions. It HOOKS the mind.
But that’s only one way to engage and grab your attention. You want to be the copywriter of your own internal script!
There are other ways too…

January 4, 2012Hello Steve,
When I was young my Mom had consulted an astrologer in Nashville,TN. As per the astrologer’s prediction I will die when I am 36 years . Right now I am 32 years. So whenever I focus on something good my mind automatically goes towards that prediction and I start feeling bad. We had huge financial problem while I was growing up .
Do you believe in Astrology ? Is there any way I can make my mind believe that I can live beyond 36 years because how can I feel something that I haven’t experienced before.
Best Regards,
Dave

Astrology is really cool… I look at my horoscope almost daily… just something fun that I have gotten into the habit of doing…
…how can you feel something you haven’t felt before?
I give a really good example here: Practicing the Abundance Vibe

January 17, 2012Steve, nice article. It goes hand in hand with the underlying principles of Appreciative Inquiry (http://www.appreciativeinquiry.org/).
Moreover, I consider enacting your visions to just bring them to life, most of the time. Enacting is “doing as if”. If self-fulfilling prophecies work on the bad side of life, what if they worked on the good side as well?
Some people wouldn’t believe it. What if they just acted as if it worked, and see what happened? (enacting enactivism) :-)

January 17, 2012Oh, I also wrote an blog post about something similar, here: http://www.appreciatingsystems.com/2011/08/the-magic-of-social-constructivism-appreciativeinquiry-solutionfocus/ that might help your readers too.

January 17, 2012Hey Nicholas – I agree completely because I have tested the self-fulfilling prophecies in my own life… some with great experiences and some with not so great experiences.
The point is clear… whatever you give your attention to is where your reality will shift, regardless if you like it or not… and if you don’t believe that statement, prove me wrong ;)

August 28, 2016If I want to change my reality and shift to an alternate me in a parallel reality in order to save my marraige and get my wife back, will this work? Or will this only work for changing things in your future like job, money, personal perspective, ect.?
